Antiques Roadshow’s Henry Sandon dies aged 95

John’s father passed away quietly on Christmas morning at a care home in Malvern, Worcestershire. Renowned for his role as the curator of the Dyson Perrins Museum at the Royal Worcester factory beginning in 1967, he became a familiar face on BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow in 1979.

Former Antiques Roadshow expert Henry Sandon has died at the age of 95.

His son, John Sandon, who also appeared on the program, fondly remembered his father as someone who brought warmth and charm to viewers, much like a beloved uncle. He praised his father’s significant influence in the realm of antiques and his special connection with Worcester, especially through his passion for Royal Worcester pottery and his vibrant character.

John recalled how his father captivated audiences every Sunday on The Antiques Roadshow. Henry’s passion for antiques, whether it was a simple piece of pottery or something more unique, was always evident. One unforgettable moment was his excitement upon finding a rare Staffordshire pottery owl jug, affectionately called ‘Ozzie’.

Henry Sandon’s life was also marked by his loving marriage of 56 years to Barbara, who passed away in 2013. The couple had three sons—David, Peter, and John—and their family grew to include three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Phillip Serrell, a fellow antiques expert and television personality known for his appearances on shows like Bargain Hunt, Flog It, and Antiques Road Trip, shared on a platform formerly known as Twitter that Mr. Sandon greatly contributed to the appreciation of antiques.

Henry Sandon’s collection, some items dating back to 100BC, included his prized Royal Worcester pottery. Interestingly, his journey in collecting started with finding broken plates in his garden near the city’s cathedral.
